Our "system" at the hotel is "internet based". We open a browser window, and then go to the corporate website that houses all of our data as well as the webpage information to run our Property Management System.
It's a dumb idea, that is showing itself today. Our internet crashed, and our system would be completely "off-line" if not for me knowing how to hotspot my phone and linking my phone to the terminal that I use. As it is, I can't print anything... so no one I check in will be able to sign their paperwork. I also wont' be able to give out any receipts in the morning.

I agree, the internet is a blessing and a curse.

Only took me a few hours of rebooting, unplugging and replugging (after blowing the dust out of the connectors) to get it up and running enough to switch back to the regular network.

That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Do the owners even have a back up for when the internet provider has to take their service down for maintenance?

We can do the old fashioned "paper" check ins... but that would only work on walk-ins.... and only if we have an "occupied/unoccupied" "room map" printed... which we couldn't print unless we knew ahead of time that the internet was going to go down... because that "map" is built into the website.

So, essentially, no not really. The owners may want to get their act together but I'm guessing they don't care about planning for internet outages.

Centralized control is forced upon us by Corporate HQ. The owner would LOVE to go back to local storage/control, and transmitting the day's business after the audit... because he hates being dependent on the internet too.

Then the head honcho owners aka corporate needs to get their act together. I didn't know your hotel was plagued by corporate idiots. Reminds me of my toll road days. Corporate would hand down an edict that wouldn't work in practice. I got one edict rescinded at the end of my shift. I told them at the meeting how it would play out in practice. They didn't want to listen. They got pissy that I followed their edict to the letter and rescinded it.
